TOPIC: Project Sizing and Estimating

Sizing represents a project planner's first major challenge. As it's been said, "a project estimate's only as good as the estimate of the size of the work to be accomplished". A valid size estimate is vital for correctly calculating the estimated effort on a project, which drives its delivery rates and schedule. A systematic and repeatable method to determine project size can and should be used to establish the initial, baseline size estimate, against which project actuals can later be compared to identify any deviations between the estimated and actual performance on a project.

Number Six Software has defined a practice of estimation based upon industry standards, combined with a non-subjective historical repository of project metrics, that establishes this initial baseline size estimate. This process, supported by well-defined requirements, represents an integral component of a successful software development lifecycle.
