TOPIC: Software Process Improvement (SPI) 101 - The Fundamentals
This presentation will introduce the discipline of Software Process Improvement, a.k.a. SPI, using the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Capability Maturity Model for Software (SW-CMM). The concepts and ideas presented, however, are general enough to be applicable to other improvement models and frameworks as well, such as ISO 9000 or the SEI's Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). It begins by covering basic terms, definitions, and concepts before progressing to more advanced concepts and recommended practices. It will cover SPI organizational, resource, and role requirements for SPI as well as share some of the presenter's experience and results with SPI programs over the years.

Pete Carrion, American Financial Group, is the Divisional Vice President in charge of Requirements Engineering for the American Financial Group (AFG) IT Services division. Before assuming this position, Pete established and led the AFG Software Process Improvement (SPI) Program and the Great American Insurance Specialty Division's software quality program (encompassing SPI, Software Quality Assurance, Configuration Management, and Formal Testing). Before coming to AFG, Pete spent over 20 years in the U.S. Air Force in the IT arena, working in a variety of organizations and positions, including computer operator/system administrator, programmer/analyst, software engineer, project and program manager, culminating with a position as Director of IT for the Air Force Space Environment Forecasting System. From 1989 - 2000, he also specialized in SPI using the Software Engineering Institute's Software Capability Maturity Model (CMM or SW-CMM), successfully leading organizations to CMM Maturity Level 2 and 3 ratings.
